Signworld getting tropical at Chester Zoo

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Recently, Chester Zoo contacted The Signworld Group looking for a solution in the Tropical Realm at the zoo. Each viewing window was in-need of a jungle themed make over. Chester Zoo’s own solution involved using camouflage style netting, which partly obscure the viewing window. With a whole host of materials available to solve this problem, Signworld’s team began testing all options.

After several tests at Signworld’s Chester HQ, the team decided on a specialist, 100% optically clear, self-adhesive digital vinyl, allowing a person to see straight through without any distortion, in addition the print was laminated to allow for the windows regular cleaning without affecting the print. Signworld’s team of designers began researching different types of tropical landscapes, which would allow for an accurate scene with leaves and vines falling strategically across the window, not to fully block viewing. Once a design was created and approved by Chester Zoo’s fantastic team, a sample was produced using Signworld’s Mimaki JV3-260 Digital Printer. The Signworld solution was then ready for application to a viewing window in the tropical realm for final testing.

The Philippine Crocodile enclosure was chosen to receive the first print application. Signworld’s team of fitters delight were handpicked for the job which involved applying the clear digital print from inside the tank to the reverse side of the window. Wearing waterproof boots, the team worked within the humid temperatures to apply the vinyl prints. Being ever professional, the engineers carried out their job flawlessly as you can tell in the images below.

Signworld are shortly due to revisit Chester Zoo to install further window graphics within the tropical realm.

Fred Perry x Stüssy Collaboration at Foot Patrol, London

Monday, June 6th, 2011

In early May 2011, Fred Perry UK contacted the Signworld Group directly with a very interesting request, 4 giant acrylic light-box numbers, to be internally illuminated, two red and two white,, all with a very tight deadline! Fred Perry UK of course need no introduction, part of the massive globally recognised label. The numbers were to be part of an installation in collaboration with Stüssy, a clothing brand created in the early 1980′s by Shaun Stüssy, heralding from Laguna Beach, California. The 2011 Spring/Summer range is the second blank canvas collaboration between Fred Perry and Stüssy and has proved to be even better than the first according to critics.

The brief for the huge acrylic numbers was simple, to create some large light-boxes in a specific font and be deep enough to allow footwear and various small products to be placed on top comfortably. With the extremely tight deadline, Signworld Group were able to put together a design and have it approved in one afternoon, moving very quickly to manufacturing. Utilising the in-house team of designers ensured that the project was in great hands and taken care of to a very high standard. Signworld’s team of engineers began to create the intricate panels and sections that would ultimately come together to create each number:

Signworld were able to manufacture and complete each of the numbers right on time for Fred Perry UK and the numbers where shipped from our HQ in Chester, to their new home at the Foot Patrol store – Berwick Street, London. On 5th May, the extremely popular UK fashion, music and art blog The Daily Street (www.thedailystreet.co.uk) featured an article on Foot Patrol’s installation featuring the acrylic light-boxes. We’ve included the article below for you and a link to the original:

Fred Perry x Stüssy Deluxe installation at Foot Patrol

The front room down at Foot Patrol has had a little makeover to promote the recent Fred Perry x Stüssy collection…

Not only is this a great installation (and it is, if only for those giant light boxes), but it’s the coming together of two of my favourite things – Foot Patrol and the Fred Perry x Stüssy Deluxe collaboration. Taking over the small entrance room or “lobby” of the sneaker store, the light boxes work so well against the black walls and slate floor. The window has of course been branded up with the iconic Fred Perry x Stüssy Deluxe collaborative logo and sees the Foot Patrol stools below it branded up with the company establishment dates also. Fred Perry have brought in a locker-room style display cabinet for the garms to hang in, similar to the style of the recent Manchester Laurel Wreath store.
Essentially, it’s a great little installation that I cannot fault, so make sure you swing by Foot Patrolnext time your in the area and check out the lightboxes or perhaps sit on one of the benches. Oh, and check out the collection obviously.
